Welcome to Himmerod Abbey
In 1135, Bernard of Clairvaux himself sent his spiritual sons, the gray Cistercian monks of Clairvaux, to the green folds by the flowing waters of the Salm. He had convinced himself of the ideal location of the valley basin between Kunowald, Salm and gentle hills.
The abbey's first name "Claustrum" means island, refuge, protection and shelter. In just a few years, the monks turned the monastery into an important religious and spiritual center of the Eifel region.
The entire monastery complex is still enclosed by the medieval cloister wall (14th century).
The structural principle of the complex is the concentric circles (like the coat of arms) in the exterior: guest house, workshops, mill, bookshop, inn, courtyard, gardens: in the interior: Church and monastery building, cloister and quadrum. In the center is the church, which was rebuilt in the 1950s according to the model of the old building by C. Kretschmar.
