EifelBahnSteig - 18th stage: From Usch/Zendscheid to Sankt Thomas
Zendscheid
Due to the flood event in July 2021, the Eifelbahn route is currently still limited in its trafficability.
This stage is particularly rich in water: we not only cross numerous small rivulets, but also hike along the Fischbach, Wingertsbach, Katzbach and several unnamed streams for a long time - and they all flow into the Kyll. When we reach the river again before St. Thomas, we realise why it has become so wide in the meantime.
One of the attractions of this stage is that the streams have very different characters. The impressions change, but there is no monotony. Right after Zendscheid, we first walk in the dark valley of the Fischbach, while afterwards the Wingertsbach offers a brighter scenery. These passages are particularly beautiful, of course, when the waters are also bubbling abundantly, for example after the snow has melted. What a pleasure to be accompanied by a murmuring brook for a long time on a hike!
In the following we offer an alternative: Either via the Katzbach valley or directly to St. Johann and into the Kyll valley. Here we hike sometimes at a greater distance from the Kyll, sometimes close to the river, before we get wonderful views of St. Thomas and its monastery on a balcony path shortly before the destination. Those interested should not miss the opportunity to visit the impressive monastery church of Sankt Thomas after the hike; it is only a few steps away from the station.
