GPS hike: Through the former quarry near Gondorf
gondorf
SECRET TIP FROM MELANIE SALZBURGER
On a warm summer evening* I like to go for a walk. Out of the village directly into the forest in the direction of Hüttingen. After the flat stretch to the entrance, the path continues slightly uphill through the forest, along a former narrow-gauge track. With a little luck and the necessary peace and quiet, you can also spot game here. When you step out of the forest, you come to the old quarry.
Here, for me, it's like taking a little trip back in time. A dilapidated quarry stone building, the high rock walls - you can easily imagine how it used to be. When people were still working hard here and the stones were then transported to the railway in Hüttingen.
This place always has something special for me. Also because of the diverse fauna and flora that can develop freely here in the nature reserve.
We continue along the road in the direction of Gondorf. Once you reach the top of the hill, you have a wonderful view of Speicher with its church visible from afar, the Spangdahlem Air Base, which never seems to sleep, or the district town of Bitburg. There, depending on the season, you can also see the sun go down.
* Even in spring, when the first tender green sprouts and the forest floor is covered with countless white anemones, I love to walk this loop.
