Röhl Way of the Cross
Röhl
The route starts at the Röhler hiking car park and takes you through a variety of landscapes and sights, including the region's historic wayside crosses. From fields and forests to hills and the Pfalzerbach stream, the route offers much to discover. An essential part of this walk are the eight wayside crosses scattered throughout the trail.
Michelskreuz: The first cross on the hike is located east of the Wackenkopf at the boundary to Röhl. The red sandstone cross, erected in 1719, is associated with the death of the pastor Michael MOHR.
Cross at the water house: On the way from Röhl to Sülm, near the water house, stands the second cross. It is a high shaft cross, which was probably renovated by Pastor Prim.
Schneiderskreuz: This cross, located on the Sülm road, is named after a tailor who is said to have experienced a miraculous healing here.
Shaft cross in the Röhl cemetery: In the new part of the cemetery is a tall shaft cross made of red sandstone, erected by tailor Johannes von Röhl in 1705 in honour of God.
Schwedenkreuz: This cross, located on Hüttinger Straße/Feldstraße, commemorates the incident during the Thirty Years' War when a man was shot by a Swedish soldier.
Shaft cross near the Fatima Chapel: Near the Fatima Chapel is an old shaft cross that was renovated by Pastor Prim in 1855.
Commemorative plaque 'Am Münchensberg': Theodor Weinsz von Röhl was killed in an accident at this site on 3 May 1817. The cross bears a low end cross with the Jesus monogram IHS.
Memorial cross at the Pfalzerbach: This cross commemorates the tragic fate of Mathias München, who was crushed by a tree trunk while cutting down a tree in 1778.
The hike is moderately difficult and 14.1 km long. It takes about 3:45 hours and leads you through fields, forests and meadows. There is also an opportunity for a rest in the Wings inn in the centre of Röhl. The total ascent and descent is 182 metres each. Enjoy the fresh air, flowers, relaxing forests and historic crosses on this beautiful hike.
