Ausstellung Gerhard Marcks
Apr 13, 2025 - Jul 6, 2025
Bitburg
Gerhard Marcks (Berlin 1889 - Burgbrohl 1981) created animal sculptures and human figures. He created his works in stone and bronze. After the First World War, he taught at the Berlin School of Arts and Crafts, at the Bauhaus in Weimar and from 1925 to 1933 at Burg Giebichenstein/Halle. The sculptor was regarded as a “gifted teacher”.
Marcks' life was marked by upheavals: military service in the First World War, the cultural policy of the NSDAP, which led to his dismissal as a teacher in Halle in 1933. Two of his works were shown in the “Degenerate Art” exhibition. His son Herbert died on the Russian front in 1943. His house, his Berlin studio and most of his works were destroyed during the Second World War. After 1945, Marcks nevertheless had the strength to make a new start, created numerous sculptures and traveled extensively.
From 1950 he lived in Cologne, later in Burgbrohl/Eifel. In the Bitburg exhibition, the thematic focus is on Gerhard Marcks and antiquity: in particular his subjective interpretations of classical figures and graphic works, such as the Orpheus portfolio. Accompanying the Gerhard Marcks exhibition, figurative drawings by Ursula Dietzsch-Kluth (Berlin 1911 - Trier 2013) will be presented in the cabinet.
