Barokksolistene - The Alehouse Sessions
Sep 12, 2025
Bitburg
Bjarte Eike cannot say for sure that the English composer Henry Purcell enjoyed an ale or two in a pub in the evening, but he does know: “Purcell created music for church festivals, the royal court, public ceremonies and also pleasing entertainment: works for the festivity of Westminster Abbey and the splendour of the royal chapel - but also melodies for the rough humor of taverns and catch clubs,” says the artistic director of the “Barokksolistene”.
In its “Alehouse Sessions”, the Norwegian ensemble revives the pub music of 17th century England on period instruments - with Purcell's overture, but also with drinking songs and sea shanties. It sounds like smoky back rooms, tart, rustic and beer-soaked, but never before has it been at such a high level. Because: “It's just old pop music!”, say the “Barokksolistene”.
A baroque jam session in a pub atmosphere? Well then: cheers!
