A rare sight: a soldier dressed in full Roman uniform guides groups through Roman Bitburg. He tells the history and anecdotes about the life of the Romans, who laid the foundations for today's Bitburg 2000 years ago. The uniforms and clothing were made by hand in a time-consuming process.
The tour goes along the Archaeologicaltrail. This reveals valuable remains of the former Roman vicus Beda.
The still visible remains of the walls of the late antique fort, some of which have been preserved in their original Roman state, give visitors an idea of Roman Bitburg and its function.
Our tip:
If you would like to find out more about the Roman way of life in the Bitburg region, we recommend a visit to the Roman Villa Otrang in the village of Fliessem, 5 km away. Information boards inform visitors about the Roman estate and what products were grown there in Roman times. Reconstruction drawings and the floor plan visible from the outside make it possible to experience the magnificent manor house in its enormous size with over 60 rooms. Visible from the outside is a small bath, which the rich Roman owner later exchanged for a larger, more luxurious bath.
