Hiking on the Oberkail-Himmerod loopNature, culture and a touch of the Eifelsteig trail accompany this hike.
You pass typical Eifel villages with their own charm and historical monuments, such as the beer mill, which has been renovated with a lot of passion. Flat paths through the Eifel forests are interspersed with many an ascent - a thoroughly varied hiking experience.
Himmerod Abbey is a prominent point on the Eifelsteig and a good halfway along the Oberkail-Himmerod loop. A spiritual place that provides new strength and energy, whether you visit the abbey bakery or take a break on the time-honoured abbey grounds. Along the Salm, the route follows romantic, narrow paths towards Eisenschmitt. After a steep ascent, the reward soon follows - the picturesquely situated Frohnert Chapel, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view.
On the second day of hiking, you start at Himmerod Monastery on the Eifelsteig trail. The route is rather flat with only a few ascents on the winding path through the green natural landscape of the Eifel. Historic mills along the way take you back in time. The small Salm river is a constant companion. A small bronze-colored sign points out a special feature along the way: you are crossing the 50th parallel! The destination of this stage is the small village of Bruch.
"Gransdorf is worth it" is an approximately 7 km long circular hiking trail of the Bitburger LandGänge. These are short hiking and walking trails that lead to the special features of each local community. The "Oberkailer Forest Route" is also part of the Bitburger LandGänge.
